Will Faith finally find its hero in Lee Min-ho?

This drama has undergone one of the most topsy-turvy searches for a
leading man I’ve seen in a long time in dramaland, and that’s saying a
lot. Upcoming fusion medical sageuk series Faith has managed to keep Kim Hee-sun
fixed as the heroine throughout its two-plus-year journey to broadcast,
but has left potential heroes Lee Jun-ki and Kang Ji-hwan in the dust.
Now it looks like Lee Min-ho might be the next big name
to fill the much-needed step in getting this show on the road. Lee
Min-ho? Yay. Lee Min-ho with mane of glory? Yum.
He’s still considering the role, so it’s not a confirmed thing. But
it’s certainly the kind of drama a young up-and-comer (yeah, it’s hard
to believe he’s still relatively new in this industry) should be
swooping up with open arms. It’s written and directed by the team behind
Sandglass–arguably the most critically acclaimed drama of all time–PD Kim Jong-hak and writer Song Ji-nah. They’re also the team behind Legend, which is probably closer to what we can expect, given that this drama is fusion-fantasy-sageuk as well.
Already cast are Choi Min-soo, Kim Seung-soo, Philip Lee, and Park Sang-won
in the Goryeo-era (918 to 1392) story about eastern medicine that
promises to mix history, action, fantasy, AND comedy. Uh, what’s left?
Throw in musical-melodrama-pantomime and you’ve got a complete set. It
reports a 30-billion won budget, which is about three times the usual
“big-budget blockbuster” range for tv, so we can expect some splashy
visuals to go along with that pretty, pretty cast.
Once Faith secures a leading man it’ll start production, and plans to be on SBS by August.

Lee Min-ho stars opposite Kim Hee-sun in Faith
So if reports are true, fantasy fusion historical epic
Faith has FINALLY found its hero in
Lee Min-ho (
City Hunter). Well, technically it had two other heroes before they had to
drop out
of the running; it’s kind of the drama that couldn’t keep a man, so
I’ll go ahead and believe the Lee Min-ho news when I see him dressed in
period costume and ditching his
City Hunter gun for a sword and his car for a horse.
The drama has managed to hold onto its leading lady through all the hero drama, and actress Kim Hee-sun
has confirmed (or re-confirmed, or re-re-confirmed, I’m honestly not
sure anymore) that she’ll be sticking with the role. This will be Kim’s
first role in six years, since 2006′s Smile Again. If you’re
unfamiliar, she was one of the reigning It Girls for the better part of
the nineties, and starred in almost every trendy drama I can remember
from that decade.
So based on the latest description, Faith is actually YET
ANOTHER time-traveling sageuk, which is maybe so common now that it’s
gone from redundant back around to being funny. I guess technically Faith
was supposed to air before all these other ones beat it to the
broadcast punch, but that’s just the name of the game, ’cause now you’re
just riding the trend instead of setting it. It’s set in the Goryeo
era, where a warrior meets a doctor from the present and the two fall in
love. Uh… Time Slip Dr. Jin anyone? Lee will play the warrior, a leader of the royal guard, and Kim the lively and animated… wait for it… plastic surgeon. HA. Okay, that’s pretty funny. What are they gonna do with a plastic surgeon in the Goryeo era?
At least now I see where the funny will come from, because before
when they called it a fantasy-medical-fusion-historical-comedy, I
thought they were just confused. At the helm is the dream team–PD Kim
Jong-hak and writer Song Ji-nah–of Sandglass, Eyes of Dawn, and Legend. Rounding out the cast are Choi Min-soo, Kim Seung-soo, Philip Lee and Park Sang-won.
This will be both Lee Min-ho’s and Kim Hee-sun’s first foray into
historical fare, so we’ll have to see if they can deliver. They’ve got a
lot of obstacles–sageuk delivery, a ten-year age gap, and stunts for
Lee–but whether it soars above expectation or goes down in flames, it
sure has my interest.
Faith has landed a broadcast slot following Ghost and premieres in August on SBS.

Kim Hee Sun Says Her Return was a Success Thanks to Lee Min Ho
Kim Hee Sun said she evaluates her return to be a success, regardless of the ratings her drama received.
On the December 17 broadcast of SBS′ Healing Camp, the actress talked about her recent drama Faith and said, "I personally want to think of it as a success."
Regarding ratings, however, Kim Hee Sun showed she was beyond the issue:
"These days people watch dramas through DMB or internet downloads a lot. I don′t think ratings these days are that important."
She
then added, "I think [my return was] a success because I got to act
with Mr. Lee Min Ho, who is 10 years younger than me. In the past it was
unimaginable to have an actress act with someone 10 years younger."
She also voiced her thankfulness toward Lee Min Ho′s fans.
"I
was very worried," she said. "I′m married and even have a child, and I
was acting with a hot actor; I was worried whether it would be
believable. I didn′t talk about my husband or my child much on set on
purpose. I was so thankful that Mr. Lee Min Ho′s fans liked me."
The
actress also said that she has to "receive blood transplants regularly"
while talking about her health and her beautiful body, and then went on
to honestly confess that she had once been an obnoxious superstar.

Lee Min Ho’s Acting Coined “Art Action”
Lee Min Ho, currently starring in “Faith,” is giving the audience a spectacular show with “art action.”
Broadcasted on August 28, the 6th episode of “Faith” brought great action to the viewers. Choi Young (played by Lee Min Ho), uses his own body to skillfully bring down Gi Chul’s soldiers earning much praise.
He knocks down his enemy with a swift roundhouse and slams hard with his bare fists. His ability to beat an enemy with his bare hands embraces masculinity and is quickly being coined as “art action.”
He will have another chance to show his hard work practicing stunts on the next episode as well. Airing on September 3, the 7th episode will have Choi Young fight Gi Chul to get him and Eun Soo (played by Kim Hee Sun) out of danger. Many are anticipating what kind of action will be shown.
The action director of “Faith” commented, “Even though there are risks and good chances of injury, Lee Min Ho passionately learns and displays great action foregoing a stunt double.”
“Faith” is broadcasted every Monday and Tuesday from 9:55pm (KST)
